PERMANENT BUT REMOVABLE IMPLANTS

Several materials have been developed to augment areas such as the folds from nose to mouth (naso-labial furrows) and the lips .

The commonest product used is e-PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a non-toxic, inert material which is readily accepted by the body and which can be easily removed if necessary.

The product is available in solid strips or tubes, which can be inserted (implanted) under the skin. The tubular variety allows tissue to grow into the hollow part (lumen) of the implant.

Nature of operation

A small incision is made at the implantation site under local anaesthetic. The implant is threaded under the skin at the required site using a specially designed instrument. The incision is closed with a rapidly dissolvable stitch.

Postoperative events

Swelling and some discomfort or bruising can occur for a few days.

Hardness of the material can be felt after the swelling has subsided, as it is not the same as the natural tissue of the body.

Migration of the material is rarely possible and may protrude through the skin if there is inadequate healing.

PARIS LIP

Synthetic injectable fillers, fat as well as implants can be used to enhance the borders of the lips and give more definition. Younger patients may wish to have more prominent and "pouting" lips. This technique using temporary fillers and implants to produce this look has been named the " Paris Lip".
